Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
